Rice Price in Serbia (CIF) - 2023
In November 2023, the average rice import price amounted to $926 per ton, waning by -2.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $989 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to November 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($1,519 per ton), while the price for India ($590 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rice Price in Serbia (FOB) - 2022
The average rice export price stood at $945 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,117 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the Czech Republic ($1,115 per ton) and Montenegro ($1,022 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($828 per ton) and Equatorial Guinea ($873 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (-0.1%).
Rice Imports in Serbia
For the fourth year in a row, Serbia recorded growth in purchases abroad of rice, which increased by 13% to 14K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, rice imports skyrocketed to $11M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +25.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +96.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Rice Exports in Serbia
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of rice decreased by -8.9% to 760 tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 834 tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, rice exports soared to $718K in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 44%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
