Salt Price in Ghana (FOB) - 2022
The average salt export price stood at $61 per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $113 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($75 per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($20 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Niger (-1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Salt Price in Ghana (CIF) - 2022
The average salt import price stood at $264 per ton in 2022, waning by -49.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 254% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $523 per ton in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Spain amounted to +10.8% per year.
Salt Exports in Ghana
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of salt and pure sodium chloride, when their volume decreased by -51.3% to 65K tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year.
In value terms, salt exports declined sharply to $3.9M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.1%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $8.1M, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Salt Imports in Ghana
In 2022, purchases abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride increased by 178% to 7.2K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn.
In value terms, salt imports soared to $1.9M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.3% against 2020 indices.
