Salt Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average salt import price amounted to $127 per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 33%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $153 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($282 per ton), while the price for India ($68 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Salt Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022
The average salt export price stood at $214 per ton in 2022, dropping by -11.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $243 per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($522 per ton), while the average price for exports to Angola ($53 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to American Samoa (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Salt Imports in Malaysia
In 2022, salt imports into Malaysia surged to 492K tons, picking up by 93% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Salt Exports in Malaysia
In 2022, shipments abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -28.1% to 21K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 35K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, salt exports contracted remarkably to $4.5M in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 91%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $7.2M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
