Salt Price in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average salt export price amounted to $128 per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 26% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $166 per ton. From December 2022 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($199 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($77.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Salt Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average salt import price amounted to $130 per ton, waning by -9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 264% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $510 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($421 per ton), while the price for Germany ($72 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Salt Exports in the Netherlands
In 2022, the amount of salt and pure sodium chloride exported from the Netherlands dropped rapidly to 3.9M tons, which is down by -16.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4.6M tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, salt exports rose notably to $441M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Salt Imports in the Netherlands
In 2022, overseas purchases of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -2.5% to 586K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 78%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 728K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, salt imports dropped to $76M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year.
