Sheep; Live Price in France (FOB) - 2023

The average sheep; live export price stood at $131 per unit in August 2023, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, sheep; live export price decreased by -24.2% against April 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $173 per unit in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Spain ($251 per unit), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($66.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lebanon (+15.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average sheep; live import price amounted to $153 per unit, picking up by 2.1% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 21% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $163 per unit. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Spain.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the Netherlands amounted to +6.5% per month.

Sheep; Live Exports in France

In 2022, the amount of sheep; live exported from France expanded slightly to 489K units, increasing by 2% on the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sheep; live exports contracted modestly to $45M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $46M in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 300K units, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, sheep; live imports contracted dramatically to $31M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 62%. Imports peaked at $41M in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
