In August 2023, the average sheep; live import price amounted to $196 per unit, dropping by -37.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 an increase of 883% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,294 per unit. From October 2022 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($236 per unit), while the price for Somalia ($114 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+25.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sheep; Live Imports in Qatar
For the fourth year in a row, Qatar recorded growth in overseas purchases of sheep; live, which increased by 1.5% to 1.1M units in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sheep; live imports soared to $137M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
