Sheet Metal Product Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average sheet metal product export price amounted to $5,588 per ton, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 21%. The export price peaked at $6,040 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($14,344 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($3,363 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+19.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sheet Metal Product Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average sheet metal product import price stood at $5,671 per ton in August 2023, increasing by 15% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $7,359 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($9,393 per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($2,858 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Sheet Metal Product Exports in the United States
In 2022, the amount of sheet metal products exported from the United States shrank to 37K tons, waning by -10.4% compared with 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 41K tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, sheet metal product exports expanded remarkably to $205M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Sheet Metal Product Imports in the United States
For the fourth consecutive year, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of sheet metal products, which increased by 10% to 32K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sheet metal product imports soared to $165M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
