Shelled Bean Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2024
The average shelled bean export price stood at $1,077 per ton in January 2024, rising by 3.9% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 58% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,376 per ton in October 2023; however, from November 2023 to January 2024, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($2,914 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($390 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lesotho (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average shelled bean import price stood at $975 per ton in January 2024, waning by -27.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2023 an increase of 189% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,364 per ton in November 2023; however, from December 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($1,465 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($576 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+26.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Shelled Bean Exports in South Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of shelled beans (dry) decreased by -14.3% to 4.7K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 9.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shelled bean exports reduced remarkably to $5.9M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $8.3M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Shelled Bean Imports in South Africa
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of shelled beans (dry), when their volume decreased by -51.1% to 2.7K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 481% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5.5K tons, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, shelled bean imports shrank remarkably to $2.3M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 396% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $5.2M, and then declined sharply in the following year.
