In May 2023, the average shrimp import price amounted to $9,969 per ton, rising by 3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 13% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $11,408 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($17,121 per ton), while the price for India ($7,913 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In May 2023, the average shrimp export price amounted to $9,364 per ton, dropping by -2.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 36% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $9,746 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($11,723 per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($5,169 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Shrimp Imports in Belgium
For the fourth consecutive year, Belgium recorded growth in purchases abroad of shrimps, which increased by 11% to 59K tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 31%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, shrimp imports soared to $660M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year.
