In May 2023, the average shrimp import price amounted to $8,148 per ton, approximately reflecting the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 11% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $8,505 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to May 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($14,424 per ton), while the price for India ($5,941 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Shrimp Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average shrimp export price stood at $11,985 per ton in May 2023, shrinking by -5.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 33% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $13,914 per ton. From December 2022 to May 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($16,701 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malta ($8,581 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Shrimp Imports in Italy
In 2022, the amount of shrimps imported into Italy fell notably to 70K tons, with a decrease of -18.7% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 87K tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, shrimp imports contracted markedly to $629M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $740M, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
