Shrimp Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023

The average shrimp import price stood at $10,096 per ton in April 2023, declining by -2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 5.9% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $10,845 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to April 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($15,528 per ton), while the price for China ($7,148 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Shrimp Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023

In April 2023, the average shrimp export price amounted to $10,319 per ton, surging by 29% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 179% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $24,327 per ton. From February 2023 to April 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($141K per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($3,344 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+27.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Shrimp Imports in Japan

In 2022, shrimp imports into Japan reached 224K tons, approximately equating 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, shrimp imports amounted to $2.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year.

Shrimp Exports in Japan

Shrimp exports from Japan rose remarkably to 861 tons in 2022, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, shrimp exports rose remarkably to $11M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +81.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 63%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
