Shrimp Price in Kenya (FOB) - 2022
The average shrimp export price stood at $13,090 per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 5.5%. The export price peaked at $18,052 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($117,834 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($3,148 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+13.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average shrimp import price amounted to $6,438 per ton, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, shrimp import price increased by +73.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 78%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $6,601 per ton, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($12,092 per ton), while the price for Tanzania stood at $3,067 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Shrimp Exports in Kenya
In 2022, overseas shipments of shrimps were finally on the rise to reach 36 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp decrease.
In value terms, shrimp exports amounted to $466K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a precipitous descent.
