Shrimp Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022

The average shrimp export price stood at $5,901 per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,843 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($10,730 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($386 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Shrimp Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021

The average shrimp import price stood at $3,847 per ton in December 2021, leveling off at the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2021 an increase of 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $4,109 per ton in January 2021; however, from February 2021 to December 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($6,914 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($2,067 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Shrimp Exports in Malaysia

In 2022, approx. 46K tons of shrimps were exported from Malaysia; surging by 2.2% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 23%.

In value terms, shrimp exports reached $274M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%.

Shrimp Imports in Malaysia

In 2022, approx. 40K tons of shrimps were imported into Malaysia; surging by 3.9% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, shrimp imports expanded to $143M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
