Shrimp Price in Romania (CIF) - 2023
The average shrimp import price stood at $8,344 per ton in May 2023, picking up by 1.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $8,423 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($11,390 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($5,490 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average shrimp export price stood at $11,021 per ton in May 2023, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. Over the period from May 2022 to May 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in May 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($14,876 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($9,196 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Shrimp Imports in Romania
For the fourth year in a row, Romania recorded growth in overseas purchases of shrimps, which increased by 0.7% to 4K tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 50%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, shrimp imports expanded significantly to $33M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
