In 2022, the average shrimp import price amounted to $1,901 per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 33%. The import price peaked at $5,479 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($11,682 per ton), while the price for China ($593 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+29.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Shrimp Imports in Uganda
In 2022, purchases abroad of shrimps decreased by 0% to 37 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 73 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shrimp imports stood at $70K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $139K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
