Smart Card Price in Tanzania (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average smart card import price amounted to $0.5 per unit, rising by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, smart card import price increased by +33.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 63%. The import price peaked at $0.7 per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($2.3 per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($0.1 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+26.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Smart Card Price in Tanzania (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average smart card export price amounted to $1.2 per unit, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, smart card export price increased by +55.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 59% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1.5 per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($14 per unit), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($0.9 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritius (+288.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Smart Card Imports in Tanzania
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) increased by 29% to 21M units in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 28M units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, smart card imports soared to $11M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $11M in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Smart Card Exports in Tanzania
In 2022, shipments abroad of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) decreased by -9.3% to 241K units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a notable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -31.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 351K units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, smart card exports contracted to $295K in 2022. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.0% over the last three-year period.
