The average spices; saffron import price stood at $5,014 per ton in 2022, dropping by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $13,419 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($5,078 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($2,104 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of spices; saffra, when their volume decreased by -10.9% to 13 tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 83% against the previous year.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% over the last three-year period.
