The average starches; inulin import price stood at $964 per ton in August 2023, surging by 7.2% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 18% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,125 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,982 per ton), while the price for Spain ($723 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Starches; Inulin Price in France (FOB) - 2023
The average starches; inulin export price stood at $1,016 per ton in August 2023, waning by -3.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a moderate increase from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, starches; inulin export price decreased by -5.3% against March 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 42% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,167 per ton. From February 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Portugal ($1,208 per ton) and Belgium ($1,170 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($814 per ton) and South Korea ($825 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Starches; Inulin Imports in France
For the fourth year in a row, France recorded growth in purchases abroad of starches; inulins, which increased by 8.6% to 346K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, starches; inulin imports skyrocketed to $279M in 2022. In general, imports saw significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the amount of starches; inulins exported from France reduced to 290K tons, falling by -14.8% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 257% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 340K tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, starches; inulin exports rose sharply to $204M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 337%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
