View PricingSugar Consumption in A Day
Sugar consumption can vary greatly from person to person, depending on their dietary habits and preferences. The recommended daily intake of added sugars for an average adult is limited to about 50 grams or 12 teaspoons, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). However, studies have shown that the average American adult consumes much more than this, with estimates ranging from 77 to 94 grams per day.
There are various sources of sugar in our diets, including natural sugars found in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, as well as added sugars in processed foods and beverages. Added sugars, which include table sugar (sucrose) and high-fructose corn syrup, are the ones that should be monitored more closely as excessive intake can contribute to various health problems.
A typical day's sugar consumption may start with breakfast, where popular sugary options such as sweetened cereals, fruit juices, flavored yogurts, and pastries can contribute a significant amount of added sugars. While natural sugars in fruit juices and yogurts may be acceptable, it is the added sugars that need to be kept in check.
Lunchtime often includes sugary condiments like ketchup, salad dressings, and sauces, which can add to the daily sugar intake. Many processed and packaged foods also contain hidden sugars, so it is important to read food labels to identify added sugars in ingredients like dextrose, fructose, maltose, and corn syrup.
Snacks between meals are another opportunity for sugar consumption. Common snack choices such as candy bars, cookies, cakes, and sugary drinks can quickly contribute to a high intake of added sugars. Even seemingly healthy snacks like granola bars and flavored yogurts can contain substantial amounts of added sugars.
Dinner meals may include sugary marinades and sauces, especially in pre-packaged meals or restaurant dishes. Sugary desserts like ice cream, cakes, and pies can also add a significant amount of sugar to the daily intake.
In addition to meals, beverages throughout the day can be a major source of added sugars. Popular choices like soda, energy drinks, sweetened coffee or tea, fruit punches, and sports drinks can contain high levels of sugar. Even seemingly healthier options like flavored water and fruit juices can contain added sugars, so it is important to check labels for sugar content.
It is worth noting that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing daily sugar intake even further, to about 25 grams or 6 teaspoons, as this level of consumption has been linked to additional health benefits.
Monitoring and reducing sugar consumption is important for maintaining a healthy diet and reducing the risk of chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. By being mindful of food choices and reading labels, individuals can better control their sugar intake and make informed decisions about their overall diet.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
