View PricingSugar Intake by Age
Sugar intake varies by age, as different age groups have different nutritional needs and tolerances for sugar. Here is a breakdown of sugar intake by age:
Infants:
For infants aged 0-6 months, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding added sugars altogether. Breast milk or formula provides all the necessary nutrients for infants, and introducing sugar at this age can have negative health effects.
For infants aged 6-12 months, the American Heart Association advises limiting added sugars to less than 1 teaspoon per day, which is equivalent to about 4 grams of sugar.
Toddlers and Preschoolers:
Toddlers and preschoolers aged 1-3 years have a recommended intake of no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) of added sugars per day. This includes both naturally occurring sugars and added sugars found in foods and beverages.
Children and Adolescents:
Children aged 4-8 years should consume no more than 32 grams (8 teaspoons) of added sugars per day. For adolescents aged 9-18 years, the limit increases to no more than 48 grams (12 teaspoons) per day. These recommendations are set by the American Heart Association to prevent childhood obesity and promote overall health.
Adults:
For adults, the American Heart Association advises limiting added sugars to no more than 24 grams (6 teaspoons) per day for women and no more than 36 grams (9 teaspoons) per day for men. This includes sugars added to foods during processing, as well as sugars added during cooking or at the table.
Elderly:
There are no specific sugar intake recommendations for the elderly, but it is generally recommended to follow the same guidelines as for adults. However, individuals with certain health conditions such as diabetes may need to further limit their sugar intake based on their specific dietary needs.
It's important to note that the recommended limits mentioned above are for added sugars, which are sugars added to foods and beverages during processing or preparation. Naturally occurring sugars in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products do not count towards these limits, as these foods also provide essential nutrients.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
