View PricingSugar Intake Recommendations Per Day
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association (AHA) provide recommendations for sugar intake per day. These guidelines aim to limit sugar consumption to maintain a healthy diet and prevent chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues.
World Health Organization (WHO) Recommendations:
The WHO recommends limiting the intake of free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake. Free sugars refer to monosaccharides (such as glucose and fructose) and disaccharides (such as sucrose or table sugar) added to foods and beverages by manufacturers or consumers, and the sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices, and fruit concentrates.
For an average adult with a normal body mass index (BMI), consuming less than 50 grams (or 12 teaspoons) of free sugars per day is considered optimal. However, they also suggest that limiting the intake to less than 5% of total energy intake (around 25 grams or 6 teaspoons) can provide additional health benefits.
American Heart Association (AHA) Recommendations:
The AHA provides more specific recommendations for added sugar intake. They suggest no more than 9 teaspoons (or 36 grams) per day for men and no more than 6 teaspoons (or 25 grams) per day for women. For children, the AHA recommends limiting added sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons (or 25 grams) per day for ages 2-18. For children under 2 years old, it is recommended to have no added sugars in their diet.
Factors Affecting Sugar Intake:
It is important to note that individual sugar intake recommendations may vary based on factors such as age, sex, physical activity level, and overall health status. Athletes or individuals with high energy needs may require slightly higher sugar intake, but it is still recommended to prioritize obtaining sugars from natural sources like fruits rather than added sugars.
Health Effects of Excessive Sugar Intake:
Excessive sugar consumption is associated with various health problems. Consuming too much sugar can lead to weight gain, which increases the risk of obesity and related conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. High sugar intake can also negatively impact dental health, causing tooth decay and cavities.
Furthermore, a diet high in added sugars often leads to poor nutrition, as sugary foods and beverages often replace healthier options like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. This can result in nutrient deficiencies and an imbalanced diet.
Tips for Reducing Sugar Intake:
To reduce sugar intake, consider the following tips:
- Read food labels: Avoid foods with high amounts of added sugars or hidden sugars like corn syrup, dextrose, or sucrose.
- Choose whole foods: Opt for fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains rather than processed snacks and desserts.
- Limit sugary beverages: Reduce intake of sugary drinks like soda, sports drinks, sweetened teas, and energy drinks. Instead, choose water, herbal tea, or unsweetened beverages.
- Plan meals and snacks: Prepare meals and snacks at home using fresh ingredients, allowing you to control the amount of added sugars.
- Watch portion sizes: Be mindful of portion sizes when consuming sugary foods to keep overall sugar intake in check.
Following these recommendations and adopting a balanced diet can help individuals maintain a healthy sugar intake and reduce the risk of associated health problems.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
