The average sulphates; of aluminium import price stood at $308 per ton in 2022, jumping by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($340 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($211 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+33.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sulphates; of aluminium export price amounted to $442 per ton, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,318 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Maldives.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Maldives amounted to -10.3% per year.

Sulphates; of Aluminium Imports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas purchases of sulphates; of aluminia decreased by -10.5% to 9.6K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29%.

In value terms, sulphates; of aluminium imports soared to $3M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Sulphates; of Aluminium Exports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sulphates; of aluminia, when their volume decreased by -11.5% to 2.2 tons. In general, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 53%.

In value terms, sulphates; of aluminium exports fell to $978 in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.1K, and then dropped in the following year.
