In 2022, the average sulphates; of nickel import price amounted to $7,556 per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $11,333 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to +28.3% per year.
Sulphates; of Nickel Imports in Ghana
In 2022, overseas purchases of sulphates; of nickels decreased by -10% to 18 kg, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 21 kg. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sulphates; of nickel imports totaled $136 in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
