Sweet Potato Price in Belgium (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average sweet potato import price amounted to $800 per ton, shrinking by -4.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 16% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $909 per ton. From February 2023 to June 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,660 per ton), while the price for the United States ($571 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Price in Belgium (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $946 per ton, surging by 12% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 39% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,569 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to June 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($2,336 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($669 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Imports in Belgium
In 2022, the amount of sweet potatoes imported into Belgium rose markedly to 51K tons, increasing by 5.8% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, sweet potato imports fell modestly to $39M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $41M, and then declined in the following year.

Sweet Potato Exports in Belgium
In 2022, overseas shipments of sweet potatoes decreased by -52.7% to 5K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 235%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 11K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sweet potato exports fell sharply to $7.9M in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 114% against the previous year.
