Sweet Potato Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average sweet potato import price amounted to $1,105 per ton, rising by 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, sweet potato import price increased by +103.8% against December 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 30% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,114 per ton in July 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to June 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,956 per ton), while the price for China ($682 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average sweet potato export price stood at $2,321 per ton in May 2023, increasing by 26% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 an increase of 308% month-to-month. The export price peaked in May 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,684 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($378 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Imports in Italy
In 2022, sweet potato imports into Italy dropped to 17K tons, falling by -8.7% compared with 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 23%.
In value terms, sweet potato imports shrank to $9.5M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21%.

Sweet Potato Exports in Italy
In 2022, overseas shipments of sweet potatoes decreased by -22.9% to 1.1K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 41%.
In value terms, sweet potato exports declined markedly to $1.2M in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.7M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
