Sweet Potato Price in Saudi Arabia (CIF) - 2022
The average sweet potato import price stood at $533 per ton in 2022, growing by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 35%. The import price peaked at $630 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,842 per ton), while the price for Egypt stood at $465 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.7%).
Sweet Potato Price in Saudi Arabia (FOB) - 2022
The average sweet potato export price stood at $1,090 per ton in 2021, increasing by 29% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sweet potato export price increased by +54.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($1,167 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait totaled $958 per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+1,058.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Imports in Saudi Arabia
In 2022, purchases abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -9.3% to 23K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 41%.
In value terms, sweet potato imports declined modestly to $12M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 51%.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -57.5% to 55 tons in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 129 tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato exports shrank dramatically to $60K in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 73%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $109K, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
