Sweet Potato Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022
The average sweet potato export price stood at $1,362 per ton in 2022, declining by -14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,919 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($7,759 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($1,052 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Congo (+28.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average sweet potato import price amounted to $514 per ton, with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,565 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($1,833 per ton), while the price for China amounted to $363 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Sweet Potato Exports in Sri Lanka
Sweet potato exports from Sri Lanka reduced to 194 tons in 2022, dropping by -9.6% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 469%.
In value terms, sweet potato exports dropped significantly to $265K in 2022. Overall, exports saw a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 369% against the previous year.

Sweet Potato Imports in Sri Lanka
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of sweet potatoes decreased by -20.7% to 6 tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 72%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 7.6 tons, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato imports contracted to $3.1K in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $3.6K, and then shrank in the following year.
