Tea Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average tea export price amounted to $4,638 per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $5,271 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($6,670 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($3,116 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tea Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
The average tea import price stood at $2,346 per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,931 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($2,465 per ton), while the price for Kenya ($1,784 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Tea Exports in Sri Lanka
Tea exports from Sri Lanka stood at 269K tons in 2022, growing by 6% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 285K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tea exports rose rapidly to $1.2B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.3B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
