Thermal Coal Production by Country

Thermal coal is a type of coal that is primarily used for power generation. Australia is the largest exporter of thermal coal and ranks third in terms of production. The country has vast coal reserves and is a major supplier to several countries, particularly in Asia. In 2019, Australia produced approximately 481 million metric tons of thermal coal.

Indonesia, the world's top exporter of thermal coal, is also one of the largest producers. The country's coal industry is primarily focused on exports, with major markets including China, India, and several other Asian countries. Indonesia's thermal coal production was around 616 million metric tons in 2019.

Other significant producers of thermal coal include Russia, the United States, South Africa, and Colombia. Russia has abundant coal resources, and its production mainly caters to domestic consumption. The United States has a well-developed coal industry, but its production has been declining in recent years due to competition from natural gas and renewable energy sources. South Africa is a major producer in Africa and exports a significant portion of its thermal coal. Colombia is one of the largest producers in Latin America and primarily exports to Europe and the Americas.
