Tobacco Refuse Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average tobacco refuse export price amounted to $1,283 per ton, shrinking by -37.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 55% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $2,941 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($5,599 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($450 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+22.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tobacco refuse import price stood at $1,855 per ton in 2022, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 52%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $4,217 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($4,393 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($749 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+80.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, tobacco refuse exports from Italy soared to 14K tons, with an increase of 17% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight descent.

In value terms, tobacco refuse exports skyrocketed to $11M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
