The average tobacco refuse import price stood at $865 per ton in 2022, growing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $900 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,006 per ton), while the price for the United States ($475 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the Netherlands.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of tobacco refuses increased by 60% to 3.2K tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tobacco refuse imports skyrocketed to $2.8M in 2022. Overall, imports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Tobacco Refuse Exports in Portugal

In 2022, the amount of tobacco refuses exported from Portugal reduced sharply to 636 tons, declining by -15.5% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 161% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 753 tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, tobacco refuse exports fell to $48K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 212%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $52K, and then shrank in the following year.
