Tobacco Refuse Price in Uganda (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average tobacco refuse export price amounted to $1,409 per ton, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($3,565 per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($240 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average tobacco refuse import price stood at $1,415 per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tobacco refuse import price decreased by -13.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 74%. The import price peaked at $2,171 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Sudan amounted to +100.0% per year.
Tobacco Refuse Exports in Uganda
In 2022, shipments abroad of tobacco refuses increased by 99% to 138 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a sharp setback.
In value terms, tobacco refuse exports skyrocketed to $194K in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a precipitous slump.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of tobacco refuses decreased by -10.2% to 2 tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year.
In value terms, tobacco refuse imports contracted to $2.9K in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +42.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year.
