Tomato Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average tomato export price stood at $2,107 per ton in August 2023, reducing by -18.9% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated mild growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, tomato export price decreased by -43.0% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 34% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $3,696 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($3,852 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($764 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average tomato import price amounted to $1,317 per ton, increasing by 34% against the previous month. In general, the import price posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 34% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $2,298 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($1,950 per ton), while the price for Albania ($579 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Exports in Italy
Tomato exports from Italy shrank sharply to 59K tons in 2022, waning by -15.8% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 70K tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, tomato exports fell to $170M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $188M, and then fell in the following year.
