Tomato Price in Spain (FOB) - 2023
The average tomato export price stood at $2,265 per ton in August 2023, surging by 5.2% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, tomato export price increased by +16.9% against June 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 33% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,496 per ton. From March 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($3,353 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($1,419 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Price in Spain (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average tomato import price amounted to $814 per ton, falling by -27.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,003 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($2,384 per ton), while the price for Portugal ($608 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Exports in Spain
For the third year in a row, Spain recorded decline in overseas shipments of tomatoes, which decreased by -4.5% to 630K tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The smallest decline of -4.3% was in 2020.
In value terms, tomato exports totaled $1.2B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.3%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
