Vanilla Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average vanilla import price amounted to $219K per ton, with an increase of 20% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 an increase of 35% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $242K per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($219K per ton), while the price for Uganda amounted to $192K per ton.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+2.8%).
Vanilla Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average vanilla export price amounted to $15,953 per ton, which is down by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 134%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $209,646 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($178,518 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($8,572 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Madagascar (-0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Vanilla Imports in Japan
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of vanilla, when their volume increased by 116% to 65 tons. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, vanilla imports surged to $13M in 2022. In general, imports, however, faced a dramatic setback.

Vanilla Exports in Japan
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of vanilla, when their volume decreased by -27.8% to 3.2 tons. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4.4 tons, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, vanilla exports fell significantly to $50K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 174% against the previous year.
