Vegetable and Melon Price in Japan (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average vegetable and melon import price amounted to $1,068 per ton, with a decrease of -12.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,299 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($2,773 per ton), while the price for China ($793 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Vegetable and Melon Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
The average vegetable and melon export price stood at $1,496 per ton in 2022, which is down by -30.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 196%. The export price peaked at $3,412 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($3,631 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($743 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of vegetables and melons was finally on the rise to reach 632K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction.
