Vegetable Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
The average vegetable import price stood at $322 per ton in 2022, dropping by -19.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $486 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($802 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($225 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Vegetable Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average vegetable export price amounted to $2,816 per ton, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 28%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($5,319 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($1,744 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Vegetable Imports in Sri Lanka
Vegetable imports into Sri Lanka rose significantly to 467K tons in 2022, surging by 14% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, vegetable imports dropped to $150M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 8.9%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $175M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
