As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (206K tons), India (193K tons) and Russia (142K tons), with a combined 49% share of global consumption.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($5.4B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($740M). It was followed by Russia.

In general, production continues to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.7%. Global production peaked at 1.2M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper production fell modestly to $7.9B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 14%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $9.5B. From 2019 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (325K tons), Russia (163K tons) and India (81K tons), together comprising 54% of global production. Japan, Germany, Turkey, South Korea, Pakistan, the UK, Ukraine, the United States, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Imports

In 2022, global imports of wallpaper and wall coverings totaled 351K tons, growing by 3.1% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 430K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper imports fell dramatically to $1.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12%. Global imports peaked at $2.1B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports By Country

India represented the major importer of wallpaper and wall coverings in the world, with the volume of imports reaching 114K tons, which was near 33% of total imports in 2022. Russia (20K tons) held a 5.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (5.1%) and Uzbekistan (4.9%). The following importers - France (16K tons), Iran (13K tons), the UK (13K tons), Azerbaijan (9K tons), Kyrgyzstan (7.1K tons) and the United States (5.8K tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

In value terms, India ($164M), France ($111M) and the United States ($105M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 28% share of global imports.

India, with a CAGR of +30.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports By Type

Wallpaper and similar wall coverings, coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics was the largest type of wallpaper and wall coverings in the world, with the volume of imports finishing at 311K tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by wallpaper and similar wall coverings and window transparencies, of paper, other than coated or decorated with plastics (40K tons), comprising a 12% share of total imports.

The second position in the ranking was held by wallpaper and similar wall coverings and window transparencies, of paper, other than coated or decorated with plastics ($275M), with a 21% share of global imports.

Global wallpaper exports fell notably to 305K tons in 2022, waning by -18.7% on 2021 figures. In general, exports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at 447K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper exports reduced notably to $1.5B in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 19%. The global exports peaked at $2.4B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
