Watermelon Price in Japan (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average watermelon import price amounted to $1,858 per ton, surging by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 49%. The import price peaked at $2,151 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,332 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,411 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average watermelon export price amounted to $2,954 per ton, falling by -29.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $4,243 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($3,659 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR totaled $2,879 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Watermelon Imports in Japan
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of watermelons, when their volume decreased by -36.6% to 677 tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 437% against the previous year.
In value terms, watermelon imports declined markedly to $1.3M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 442% against the previous year.
