In 2022, the average wool; carded import price amounted to $780 per ton, reducing by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $5,895 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Wool; Carded Imports in Uganda

For the fourth year in a row, Uganda recorded growth in overseas purchases of wool; carded, which increased by 13% to 323 kg in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +21.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wool; carded imports expanded modestly to $252 in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
