In 2022, the average zinc dust export price amounted to $449 per ton, waning by -19.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 73%. The export price peaked at $1,063 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($879 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($214 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average zinc dust import price amounted to $5,794 per ton, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 1,129%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $44,200 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for India amounted to +11.2% per year.

In 2022, zinc dust exports from Uganda surged to 404 tons, increasing by 19% against the previous year's figure. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, zinc dust exports reduced to $182K in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage.

Zinc Dust Imports in Uganda

In 2022, overseas purchases of zinc dusts decreased by -43.4% to 189 kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 334 kg, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, zinc dust imports fell markedly to $1.1K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 181% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.9K, and then plummeted in the following year.
