Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, freshwater fish exports fell to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Libya (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together generating X% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (X%) and South Africa (X%). Algeria (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Libya ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together comprising X% of total exports. Tanzania, South Africa, Gambia and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the amount of freshwater fish imported in Africa rose remarkably to X tons, growing by X% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, freshwater fish imports expanded to $X in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tunisia dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2023. Algeria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Burkina Faso (X%), Algeria (X%) and Lesotho (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Burkina Faso (X p.p.), Tunisia (X p.p.) and Algeria (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
