For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which increased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports dropped to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Algeria was the major exporter of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Angola (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. Libya (X tons), Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). At the same time, South Africa (X%) and Angola (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Libya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (X%), Egypt (X%) and Equatorial Guinea (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Angola (X p.p.) and Equatorial Guinea (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Egypt (X p.p.) and Nigeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) remains the largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria amounted to X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (X% per year) and Nigeria (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2023, approx. X tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were imported in Africa; waning by X% against 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2023, Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the major importers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Africa, together resulting at near X% of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Tanzania (X%), Kenya (X%) and South Africa (X%). Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total imports. Kenya, Tunisia, South Africa, Tanzania and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Among the main importing countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
