Raw Silk Market Size in Africa

After two years of growth, the African raw silk market decreased by X% to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, consumption saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Raw Silk Production in Africa

In value terms, raw silk production surged to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. South Africa (X tons) remains the largest raw silk producing country in Africa, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, raw silk production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Madagascar (X tons), with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa stood at X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (X% per year) and Madagascar (X% per year).

Raw Silk Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2023, the amount of raw silk exported in Africa fell slightly to X tons, waning by X% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raw silk exports expanded significantly to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Tunisia (X tons) was the major exporter of raw silk, creating X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons), achieving a X% share of total exports. South Africa (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw silk exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Rwanda (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (X p.p.) and Rwanda (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest raw silk supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In Tunisia, raw silk exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Rwanda (X% per year) and South Africa (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2023, purchases abroad of raw silk decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, raw silk imports fell notably to $X in 2023. In general, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Tunisia dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Morocco (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Tunisia (X p.p.) and Morocco (X p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw silk in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a X% share of total imports.
