Vanilla Market Size in Africa

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the African vanilla market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a prominent increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Vanilla Production in Africa

In value terms, vanilla production shrank to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, production failed to regain momentum.

Madagascar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of vanilla production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, vanilla production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uganda (X tons), sixfold.

In Madagascar, vanilla production shrank by an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Uganda (X% per year) and Comoros (X% per year).

The average vanilla yield surged to X kg per ha in 2023, growing by X% compared with 2022. Over the period under review, the yield showed a significant increase. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, approx. X ha of vanilla were harvested in Africa; which is down by X% against 2022 figures. In general, the harvested area saw a dramatic curtailment. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to vanilla production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2022, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In 2023, shipments abroad of vanilla decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, vanilla exports declined to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Madagascar (X tons) represented the key exporter of vanilla, generating X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons), comprising a X% share of total exports.

Exports from Madagascar decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Uganda (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Uganda (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Madagascar saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest vanilla supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Uganda stood at $X per ton.

In 2023, overseas purchases of vanilla decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vanilla imports reduced slightly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Mauritius (X tons), distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Seychelles (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the largest importers of vanilla, together achieving X% of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to vanilla imports into Mauritius stood at X%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Tunisia (X%), Morocco (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Namibia (X%), Swaziland (X%), Egypt (X%), Uganda (X%), Rwanda (X%) and Seychelles (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Madagascar (X%) and South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Swaziland, Namibia, Mauritius, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Uganda, Seychelles and Tunisia increased by X, X, X, X, X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
