In value terms, wood pellets exports surged to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the main exporter of wood pellets in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Tunisia (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (X%) and Swaziland (X%). Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood pellets supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), Tunisia ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. Morocco, Ghana, Swaziland and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Morocco, with a CAGR of X.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Wood pellets imports dropped to X tons in 2023, shrinking by X% on the year before. In general, imports recorded a significant decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood pellets imports rose significantly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Swaziland (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (X%). Uganda (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Malawi (X%), Gabon (X%), Kenya (X%), Botswana (X%), Egypt (X%), Nigeria (X%) and Namibia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Uganda (X%), Zimbabwe (X%) and Swaziland (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kenya (X p.p.), Uganda (X p.p.), Swaziland (X p.p.), Botswana (X p.p.), Namibia (X p.p.), Malawi (X p.p.), Gabon (X p.p.), Zimbabwe (X p.p.), Egypt (X p.p.) and Nigeria (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.
In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood pellets in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Swaziland totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (X% per year) and Botswana (X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
