Exports from Argentina

In 2021, mdf exports from Argentina surged to X cubic meters, growing by 18% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, MDF exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uruguay (X cubic meters) was the main destination for MDF exports from Argentina, with a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, MDF exports to Uruguay exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (X cubic meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Paraguay (X cubic meters), with a 0.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uruguay stood at +14.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+9.0% per year) and Paraguay (-29.7% per year).

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the key foreign market for MDF exports from Argentina, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 0.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Uruguay totaled +16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+10.5% per year) and Canada (-37.5% per year).

In 2021, the average MDF export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, declining by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Paraguay ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Argentina

MDF imports into Argentina contracted sharply to X cubic meters in 2021, falling by -21.9% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 148%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, MDF imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of MDF to Argentina, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, MDF imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X cubic meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X cubic meters), with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil stood at +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+14.2% per year) and China (-7.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Brazil ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest MDF suppliers to Argentina, together accounting for 68% of total imports.
