Potato Market Size in CIS

After four years of decline, the CIS potato market increased by X% to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Potato Production in CIS

In value terms, potato production expanded slightly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest potato producing country in the CIS, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, potato production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belarus (X tons), with an X% share.

In Russia, potato production decreased by an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Kazakhstan (X% per year) and Belarus (X% per year).

In 2023, the average yield of potatoes in the CIS declined slightly to X tons per ha, which is down by X% against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the potato yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, the harvested area of potatoes in the CIS was estimated at X ha, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

Potato exports soared to X tons in 2023, jumping by X% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports rose markedly to $X in 2023. In general, exports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached X% of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Russia (X%) and Kyrgyzstan (X%). Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the potatoes exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Russia (X%) and Azerbaijan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (X%) and Belarus (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Kazakhstan increased by X percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2023, reducing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2023, purchases abroad of potatoes decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports shrank to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest importer of potatoes in the CIS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Azerbaijan (X%). The following importers - Moldova (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the potatoes imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Azerbaijan (X%), Belarus (X%) and Moldova (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
