Sugar Market Size in CIS

After two years of growth, the CIS sugar market decreased by X% to $X in 2023. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Russia was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to X% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Azerbaijan (X%).

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. Belarus (X%) and Azerbaijan (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Azerbaijan (X p.p.) and Belarus (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest sugar supplier in the CIS, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In Russia, sugar exports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (X% per year) and Azerbaijan (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2023, waning by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of sugar decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sugar imports fell to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Uzbekistan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of sugar in the CIS, achieving X% of total import. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), mixing up a X% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Tajikistan (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2023, picking up by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
