Potato Market Size in Europe

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. France, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Belgium, Belarus, Denmark and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the average potato yield in Europe contracted slightly to X tons per ha, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of potatoes, namely France, the Netherlands and Germany, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), achieving a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X tons) and the UK (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Belgium (X tons) represented the largest importer of potatoes, committing X% of total imports.
